This is not a pleasant condition and often accompanied by pain, so what causes diarrhoea? There are many reasons and if it continues for an extended amount of time there can be other complications. These include dehydration, due to water being flushed through and exiting the body, and a general weakening of the body due to essential vitamins and minerals not getting the chance to be absorbed.
Overeating or eating the wrong foods
Anything which upsets the digestive system can be what causes diarrhoea. Our digestive tract is quite sensitive, and diarrhoea is one way of your body telling you that you may be overdoing it. However, if you have an intolerance to a certain food, then diarrhoea may well be the outcome. Even common foods, such as milk or eggs can cause a reaction, and an intolerance can occur suddenly at any age.
Germs, viruses or bacteria
These can enter into the body via water, food or even air. Sometimes the cause will be difficult to fathom. Anyone who has diarrhoea which continues for more than 48 hours should be seen by a doctor (even less if the person is very young or very elderly)
Antibiotics
Diarrhoea is a very common side effect of taking antibiotics. If it is very severe or goes on for an extended period of time it is imperative that you consult your doctor, as the antibiotics may well not be entering into your system.
These are some common reasons, but there are many other, more complex reasons, as to what causes diarrhoea.
