Pediatrics - What Doctors in This Field Can Do

When a person specializes in the field of pediatrics, this means he or she works with infants, kids, teens and even young adults. The job is to make sure the child develops into a happy, healthy grown up. In addition, the doctor will monitor how the child develops and make sure they're hitting the right milestones. Discover a few more details about what's expected of a doctor in this field.

Conduct check ups
One of the most important things to do with newborns is to make sure they get all necessary checkups. During this time, the doctor will assess weight, length, eating habits, and more. Also as the child grows, he or she will continue to get regular checkups to make sure they're developing in the right manner. In addition, kids will go through a series of essential shots to help prevent certain illnesses. A doctor in pediatrics can administer such shots and will do so as necessary. They are done in stages, usually during the appropriate check-up time.

Diagnose and treat sick kids
Issues such as the common cold or sniffles, is inevitable in childhood. It's the reason for many sleepless nights and other frustrations for new parents. To help a child feel better, a doctor in pediatrics can offer natural remedies such as humidifiers and vapor rubs, as well as medicines such as children's ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If for some reason a child isn't responding to these solutions, then the doctor will find out what the root of the problem is and do everything to fix it.

Deal with injuries
When children hurt themselves, parents want nothing more than to take the pain away. Depending on the severity of the injury, the parent may take the child to the emergency room to see a doctor in pediatrics. From bumps and bruises, to major falls or broken bones, the doctor is able to assess the issue and treat it.

Offer recommendations
If a doctor that works in pediatrics notices that a child seems to be having difficulty in certain areas such as speech and language, motor skills, and more, then he or she can address it as much as possible and also offer referrals to specialists if need be. For instance, for children with chronic ear infections, the doctor may initially prescribe antibiotics.

Yet if this proves not to be effective, and the child continues to get infections, the pediatrician will usually refer the parent and child to a specialist in the ear, nose and throat area of a children's hospital. Most often, the child will get ear tubes to help the ear drain effectively and prevent more ear infections.

Work various schedules
A pediatrics' doctor can have a varied schedule, depending on where they work. For instance, in a hospital, the hours can vary, especially if you work in an emergency room. But for the most part, this type of doctor may work a full work week, 40 hours, or sometime 60, depending on need. Also, many of these doctors are on call and work when their services are needed, since babies can get sick at the drop of hat.

Sports Doctors - Helping Athletes Recover

Athletes of any type live a slightly different lifestyle than non-athletes. Their lifestyle is a little more prone to certain kinds of injury. They are also affected by different kinds of psychological problems. Because of the special needs of athletes, new fields of medicine have been introduced to tailor their services to these athletes.

Sports medicine is a field focused on the recovery of injuries that occur while playing a sport or participating in any other athletic activity. Sports medicine doctors are more familiar than general practitioners with injuries that usually result from heavy strain and physical activity. Because all of their clients are athletes, they quickly become familiar with common athletic related injuries. Sports medicine's first priority is helping the patient recover, but they also try to get the patient back on their feet as soon as possible.

Sports psychology is also a relatively new field. It helps athletes with mental and emotional problems that are impeding them from performing their best. They focus on things like motivation and team relationships in an attempt to keep the athlete as psychologically healthy as possible. The theory is that a psychologically sound athlete will be more motivated and focused, and will perform optimally.

While it may seem silly to you that so many medical and psychological resources are being focused on men and women essentially playing games, keep in mind that sports medicine helps anybody who exercises regularly, and regular exercise is a vital key to overall health.

If you run marathons, and you start having pains in your legs or feet, or if you're a dancer and you have an achy back, sports medicine doctors will best be able to diagnose and treat your pain, and sports psychologists can help you get back to the mentality you had before your injury.
